Summer Camp Opportunities

The Stranahan Arboretum, UT Biological Sciences and SciMaTEC are offering unique summer camp experiences in science with a decidedly current-events angle. Entitled "The REAL Reality Series", the 2005 camp program will draw from popular TV themes to explore various aspects of science, and relate these themes to true science investigation.

The camps are to be held for three weeks in July, with each week following the same theme but serving different age levels. July 11 to 15 is for ages 7 & 8, July 18 to 22 is for ages 9 to 10, and July 25 to 29 is for ages 11 to 14. Each week the activities will be modified to the age level being served.

The effort to meet popular science-themed programs is reflected in the daily titles, For, example, the first day theme is "Survivor", with team-building activities emphasizing inclusion and common goals in science investigation.

To answer the question "what is life?" the camp counselors will take on a "Stargate" theme, examining the basic components of life. Other daily themes include "Crime Scene Investigation" to learn about scientific investigation, Jurassic Park to discover present day dinosaurs, and the Animal Planet"s "Most Extreme" series that looks at the amazing adaptations of life on earth.

The general agenda is to start at the Stranahan Arboretum grounds, collecting materials and data for the day's activities, then traveling to the UT campus to work in the labs, see exhibits, etc. Once projects are done for the day, campers spend the remainder of the afternoon at the UT Student Recreation Center.

People to serve as camp leaders are being sought. Applications and job descriptions can be obtained by contacting the Stranahan Arboretum Program Coordinator.

Ideal applicants would be professional teachers or students at graduate level of study in either Education, Art, Biology or Ecology. However, all disciplines are encouraged to investigate the options, since the camps also include activities in the arts and writing.

Counselors would be asked to participate in planning some activities in June, as part of their service. Compensation would be from the camp proceeds. Candidates may want to check with their superiors or advisors as to whether they can use the June planning activity and the July camp time as contact hours to meet various professional or educational goals.
