Dialogues Across College Barriers

SciMaTEC (Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center) and the Center for Teaching and Learning were proud to sponsor a new luncheon seminar series called "Dialogues Across College Barriers" aimed at bringing together the faculties of the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Education.

The series included four spring lectures. The inagural event welcomed speakers Dr. Charlene Czerniak and Dr. Emilio Duran who presented a talk entitled "A Model of Collaboration Between the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Education."

The second lecture in the series was delivered by Dr. Alison Spongberg, a faculty member in the EEES program at The University of Toledo. Her discussion was entitled, "Educational Funding Opportunities for the Sciences."

The third lecture was co-sponsored by SciMaTEC, UT Mathematics Department, Pi Mu Epsilon, Delta X math club, the Student Activities Office and the UT Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Dr. Hyman Bass, the Roger Lyndon Collegiate Professor of Mathematics and professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Michigan presented two talks regarding mathematics education.

For the final lecture in the series we were delighted to welcome Dr. Elizabeth Cole, Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Dr. Rosalind Hammond, Associate Dean of the College of Education from Bowling Green State University. They discussed "Collaboration: Shaping the Future Through Partnerships."

The Dialogues Across College Barriers proved to be an extremely important series and helped create many lasting, cross-college relationships. The series will continue during the 2005-2006 academic year and will include speakers from area colleges and universities including UT, BGSU, Lourdes College, and Owens Community College.

If you are interested in participating in next year's series, please contact Dr. Emilio Duran for more information.
